Dru Secrest is an AmeriCorps VISTA member assigned to the American Legion Auxiliary National Headquarters. Recently, she helped coordinate the collaboration of the American Legion Auxiliary with fellow Call 2 Service Corps member organization Blue Star Families for their Operation Honor Cards program. Operation Honor Cards is a joint program between Blue Star Families, Points of Light, the American Red Cross and ServiceNation to collect pledges for community service hours. These hours are pledged towards the goal of first lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden’s Joining Forces Initiative, which seeks to increase the number of volunteer service hours in support of our nation’s veterans and their families. On Feb. 29, President Kris Nelson of the ALA handed over a mega card with 6 million pledged hours from the ALA membership to a representative of the Joining Forces Initiative.
Dru helped coordinate the ALA’s participation in the pledge drive among ALA members and was the point of contact between the ALA and Blue Star Families. Dru drafted material for the ALA’s website that directed members how to pledge their service hours for Operation Honor Cards. She also created material for the ALA’s eNews and eBulletin pages and made material regarding OHC available to the ALA’s members on the ALA website.
